The Crucial Importance of Mindset in Sales
The sales function is often perceived by our society as a sort of way out for people who did not well at formal education pathways. When I was at a reception many years ago of the wedding someone asked me “What are you doing for a living.” I told him proudly “I am in Sales.” He asked me straightaway the following question “What did you really want to do with your life?” Hallo, what a question!
I told him that salespeople are the true motor of our economy, and this will go on for ever. Without sales nothing happens. There would not be smoke leaving the factory towers if there was nothing sold. Afterwards he left the perimeter, I was not offended by his question. This question made it very clear how salespeople are perceived in his mind. He was not alone in this way of thinking.
When you are in Sales you need to have a strong Mindset, because you will be confronted on your daily journey with a lot of resistance and rejection. Therefor it is crucial when you leave your home early in the morning and the rubber of your car hits the road, you need to become “Invincible”, you need to be “Unlimited”.
Sometimes salespeople ask me what they can do to develop this type of mindset. The reason they ask it is because we all have negative thoughts during the day and sometimes, they can take us on the wrong path during our customer’s visits, leading to nowhere.
I give them the tremendous advice I learned from Anthony Robbins about changing our Mindset. Realize you can change your mindset in a heartbeat. Really? How? By focusing on three things.
The first thing to do is to go back in the past and think about something you have done well. When you think about it you will get immediately positive feelings. If you see a picture in your mind, make it stronger, make the colours brighter and you will get a stronger positive feeling. Note “You will get what you focus on in your life.” So, decide to focus on these things that really boost you.
The second thing to work on is your body language. Your body language reflects the way you are thinking. So, walk upright, hold your shoulders open, demonstrate openness in all your gestures and above all SMILE. A smile can have a magic effect on the way you are perceived by your customers.
The third thing to focus on is the words you use. Use dynamic & vibrating words. Selling is a transfer of enthusiasm this needs to be reflected in the way you talk. Learn how to speak with power.
This triad combination will help you get results faster, certainly if you are well prepared for your visits. My advice is preparing your visits by visualising them upfront. See a successful outcome.
